The Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta 1.6 litre DOHC

It certainly looks like the good old days when the Ford TX3’s were kings of the road may be making a comeback to the Malaysian scene. This time, it is not the TX3, but something close to it, and it is in the form of the Ford Fiesta, dubbed by many enthusiasts as the ‘mini’ Focus.

The Ford Fiesta already has made a name for itself in Motorsport in the UK and Europe, and is a car that will appeal to driving enthusiasts. In Malaysia, the young driving enthusiasts are hungry for a sporty car that does not cost an arm and a leg, and the Fiesta is expected to fill this niche.

What is good about the Fiesta is that it is going to be affordable, yet can deliver the performance that will provide driving pleasure to sports enthusiasts. Equipped with a 1.6 litre DOHC fuel injected engine producing 120PS at 6,000 rpm and 152 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm, the Fiesta is in fact more powerful than the 1.6 litre TX3 of more than two decades ago.

There are two variants to be made available – a 5-speed manual 1.4 litre model, and a 6-speed dual clutch transmission for the 1.6 litre model.

Also slated to be standard equipment is ABS, with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) with Traction Control (TC).

The Fiesta will be fully imported from Thailand, from the Rayong production facility that also makes the Mazda 2. Both the fiesta and the Mazda 2 are built on the same platform, and like the Mazda 2, the Fiesta will be available in both sedan and hatchback form.

The Ford Fiesta is due to be here in the fourth quarter 2010, and prices are expected to range from RM75k to RM85k.
